Abstract

Basophilic leukemia is the rarest leukemia showing prominent basophilia at the time of
diagnosis. It was first described by Joachim in 1906, thereafter there has been a debate
on whether it is a disease entity or a variant of chronic myelogenous leukemia. We
have experienced three cases of basophilic leukemia with typical features of acute
leukemia and prominent basophilia. From the findings of these three cases and review of
previous reports we propose a classification of basophilic leukemia as follow :
1. Acute basophilic leukemia
1) Blast crisis of chronic basophilc leukemia
2) Acute myleoid leukemia, basophilic variant (FAB Ml or M2)
2. Chronic basophilic leukemia
1) Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic basophilc leukemia
2) Philadelphia chromosome negative chronic basophilc leukemia
